Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Tackles Peterborough Speedway

JBJ win 5-28 (2)After opening the 2016 season a week earlier, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – kicked-off the Peterborough Speedway portion of its schedule – Saturday, May 28th – with the first of the year’s 6 events at Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

Duane Cinnamon and Rick Warnes paced the field to the green flag as 11 of the dozen OMRS teams in the pits rolled onto Peterborough Speedway for their 25 lap main event.

A red flag for a mechanical issue on the #46 machine of Christopher Mulders brought the pack to a halt in the 2nd turn. Track clean-up and safety crews rolled the prone racer into the grass and the field got ready for the restart. Cinnamon – who had been forced to watch the season opener a week earlier from the sidelines – ran some flawless laps at the front of the field as the Ontario Legends Series graduate controlled the field.

The caution flew for a turn 3 incident involving Brad Stevenson and former series champion Rob Warnes. Each driver was able to continue the event; albeit from the rear of the field. Back under green, Cinnamon reassumed the lead, but his rear-view mirror was now filled with images of the #63 of John Baker Jr., who picked-up the opening round win and Stu Robinson Jr.

Even with a pair of the series’ heavy hitters on his tail, the driver of the #41 wouldn’t relinquish the lead. The 3 front runners broke away from the rest of the field, with Baker playing follow-the-leader until he grabbed the top spot with a pass as the lap counter showed 21 circuits complete. Cinnamon held onto the runner-up position, with Robinson, Alex Lees and Ryan Dick rounding out the top 5. Rick Warnes, Randy Hollingsworth, Rob Warnes, Stevenson and Willow Barberstock were next across the line.

Earlier in the night John Baker Jr., Brad Stevenson, Stu Robinson Jr., and Rob Warnes took the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series qualifying events.
