OMRS Thrills a Near Capacity Fan Appreciation Night Crowd at Peterborough Speedway

IMG_3055Any entertainer will honestly tell you that they save their best performance for a full house. Saturday, August 15th the popular Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – delighted a strong crowd on Fan Appreciation Night at Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

A strong field of Ontario Modifieds Racing Series teams rolled from the staging area, with Gary Tryon and Jamie Wagar showing the way. After experiencing some tough luck in earlier events, Wagar – a former Thunder Car racer at Peterborough Speedway – was fast during the opening stages, but was no match for John Baker Jr., who took over the top spot with a handful of laps showing on the scoreboard. Donny Beatty – who is having a successful freshman campaign in the open-wheeled division – followed J.B.J. across the line. Nick Lees, Wagar and Cory Horner completed the fast 5 finishers. It was Baker’s 3rd consecutive Ontario Modifieds Racing Series win at the venue known as Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

OMRS qualifying heat race winners were Nick Lees, Cory Horner, Brad Stevenson and Donny Beatty.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Peterborough Speedway notes: It was a tough night for several OMRS teams. While Nick Lees recorded a 3rd place finish in the main event, his twin brother Alex had an evening he’d rather forget about. It started with a flat tire on his trailer and continued on the track, when transmission issues sidelined the #07 ride. Rookie of the Year hopeful Willow Barberstock’s #62w machine made heavy contact with the first turn retaining wall, but thanks to some help from other drivers in the OMRS family, the popular 15 year-old was able to make the main event starting grid but parked on the infield pit lane before the checkered flag. 2014 series champion Robert Warnes experienced issues with his equipment during practice and missed the show…When early evening showers forced speedway officials to cancel the on-track portion of Fan Appreciation Night, a number of drivers including Barberstock and main event winner John Baker Jr. handed out treats and signed autographs in the grandstand.

OMRS will be part of the rescheduled Chase for the Colours pole qualifier Saturday, August 22nd and will conclude the Peterborough Speedway portion of its 2015 calendar Saturday, August 29th
