Derrick Tiemersma Captures First Win of 2009

Just two weeks ago the #7 Outlaw was towed off the track and hauled back home with a mangled front end. The 7 Team returned to Peterborough with repairs completed and their car ready to race.
But during the first heat race of the evening, disaster strikes again – not once, but twice in the same race! Tiemersma was able to limp to

Saturday night offered a change from the normal routine by running the Enduro under the lights. As the huge field of 32 cars moved off it wouldn’t be presumptuous to guess that number would be dramatically reduce 250 laps later.

A Turn of Events
Saturday night turned out to be one of those nights that nobody could have predicted. All the talk was about the 100-lap Late Model Feature race. The past few weeks have been a crash fest in this series and lots of cars have been sidelined while repairs are happening. Like any other track a 100 lap race draws in some new faces who have their eyes on the big pay cheque for winning, so most of us were wondering how many would survive the race based on the previous weeks.

Dodging the weather bullet yet again
Another weekend approached and another forecast of rain. It has happened a few times this year and again many tracks in eastern Ontario cancelled their race programs with the impending bad weather approaching. Peterborough Speedway again thought lets wait and see, and it’s a darn good thing. Even with a few black clouds north and allot of them to the south the cars lined up for racing. A little more than 3 hours later the only thing that had fallen was allot of checkered flags,

Concrete and Steel
Another wild night of stock car racing took place on Saturday night as the mechanized warriors took to the fast 1/3-mile track in Canada. I’m sure allot of people would think a small paved track wouldn’t offer much excitement because of the short distance around but it’s actually the opposite. Drivers have very few chances to get around the car leading so when they get the chance it’s foot to the floor and try to save it before the corner.

DOUBLE FEATURES FOR TQ'S
Saturday night proved to be another winning night both for the racers and fans alike. With beautiful weather and light breeze it made for a perfect night of racing. Along with the regular racers, we were again treated to a visit by the TQ Midget’s, with not one but two feature events. After the huge crash in the feature a few weeks previous prevented the feature from being run, we were able to open the evening with a full feature race.

Rain Rain Go Away
Although it seemed water would be the only thing running at Peterborough Speedway on this Saturday night one stronger input actually won out. With the weather office saying rain, and tracks all around calling off their shows for rain, the drivers at Peterborough did get their chance to run. It’s not raining now, let’s run is what came out of the drivers meeting, and run they did.

A NIGHT FULL OF ACTION
There was lots of excitement this past Saturday at Peterborough Speedway as not only 3 classes of racing took to the track but 2 different specials during the intermission kept race fans at the edge of their seats. Among the night’s entertainment was a new Roll Over competition that sees wanna be stunt devils earning points for each side of their car that touches the infield.

Finally - we got a race in.
Mother Nature prevented the first round of the Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series from being raced on Sunday as rain and snow - yes, SNOW - made for slippery and unsafe driving conditions. While Monday saw temperatures stay well below seasonal and cold winds blowing around the track, the rains held off and the race was held. The first quarter of the fifty car race gave fans at Peterborough Speedway much to cheer about as the cars banged and bumped their way to the halfway mark.

| |
NIGHT CUT SHORT
Unfortunately mother nature beat out the racers and fans Saturday night. The only thing we could have held after the down pour were boat races. With some luck this upcoming May long weekend double header will be a success.

A NIGHT FULL OF FUN
Craig Graham is picking up where he left off last season as he drove his #98 Limited Late Model to victory Saturday night. Graham who finished last year in first place in the LLM division, was able to finally get by a pack of cars just past the 13 lap and from there, Graham never looked back. The first dozen laps of this feature were probably the best of the night. Fans were treated to some real tight and clean racing for the first 12 laps.

SEASON KICKS OFF UNDER SUNNY SKIES
It may go down as one of the best Opening Nights in Peterborough Speedway history, it not it certainly was among the best in recent memory. First off, the weather was fantastic as sunny skies greeted drivers and their crews when they arrived for practice earlier in the day. When fans started arriving for their first taste of racing this season a beautiful April night greeted them. Nothing like the wet cold Opening Nights of the past, many of which were out right wiped out by Mother Nature.

2005 IN REVIEW
Four point’s champions have been crowned after another season of racing around the one-third mile Peterborough Speedway! In the Kawartha Chrysler Thunder Car division, it was a repeat champion, as Donny Beatty backed up a title he won two years ago with another championship, winning five features along the way. Other feature winners included Jamie Horner, who with two feature wins in the last three weeks of the season has served notice she will be a force to be reckoned with next year

2005 POINTS SEASON WRAPS UP
It was the Kevin Fletcher and Rob Degeer show as Fletcher took the feature win and two heats – Degeer won two heats as well – in the Tribospec/Sunoco Lubricants Ontario Legends twenty-five lap feature race! Dave Foss (#44) and Fletcher (#1) jumped out to an early advantage, with Fletcher jumping into the lead after diving to the low side of Foss as they raced into turn three on the opening lap.

ROB KERR CLAIMS MINI STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP
For our first fall racing day at Peterborough Speedway, we had a perfect warm sunny fall day with lots of great racing throughout the entire evening. It’s looking really good for next week’s racing weather and Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colour’s weather the following October 6th, 7th, and 8th weekend too.
The Mini Stocks wrapped up their points season tonight with every Mini Stock racing at their best.
| |
HORNER CLAIMS FIRST FEATURE WIN
Robert Kerr only led one lap of the Peterborough Hyundai-Subaru Mini-stock feature, but it was the one that everyone will remember – the last one! Jamie Sprayson (#38) opened up a large lead early in the twenty-lap feature, while Andrew Swindells (#7), Rob Payne (#48), Warren Croft (#84), Shawn Salmon (#55) and Dale Laking (#44) all battled for second place. It only took a couple laps for Swindells to break away and begin catching Sprayson.

POINTS BATTLE HEATS UP
John Baker Sr. in the #23 Freemen t he had to do in his efforts to win another track championship as he went 3 for 3 in the Lucas Oil Weekend Warrior Series. Baker Sr. won both his heats and went on to finish ahead of Craig Graham in the feature for the hat trick. Graham should have won the second heat of the night but a brief slip in turn 2 turned costly as Baker Sr. easily got by and went on to win the heat.

| |
CLARK BREAKS FLETCHERS STREAK
Rob Clarke took the lead after just one lap and led the final seventy-four circuits to record a victory in the Seventh Annual Don Biederman Memorial OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model 75 at the one-third mile Peterborough Speedway on September 3. It was Clarke’s second win in the event, after winning the inaugural race back in 1999. Following Clarke across the finish line were Jeff Hanley, John Fletcher, Ed Bowlby and TJ Woolsey.

| |
BEAUCHAMP CLAIMS VICTORY IN THE LOGELS AUTO PARTS 200
Kerry Micks started the Logel’s Auto Parts 200 CASCAR Super Series race from the pole, gave up the lead just past the halfway point and then came within inches of reclaiming the lead on the last lap, but had to settle for the runner-up position, as Ron Beauchamp emerged victorious! Rounding out the top ten were Dave Whitlock, DJ Kennington, Scott Steckly, Don Thomson, Peter Gibbons, Dave Jacombs, Doug Brown and Derek Lynch.

BAKER COMES OUT ON TOP
It took a few tries to get the Limited Late Model Battle of the Tracks started, but once everything sorted itself out, it was Peterborough Speedway’s own John Baker Sr. who found himself holding the checkered flag! Early on, Baker (#23) battled Jeff Walt (#31x) for the top spot, but Walt dropped off the pace; Tony Tiemersma (#7), Ron Quesnelle (#57), Craig Graham (#98), Vic Parsons (#1), bill Northam (#85) and Spencer MacPherson (#31) all lurked closely behind.

| |
DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND ACTION PACKED.
The Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series continued Sunday night (July 31st) with the Old Smoke House 250. The race got off to a great start as 39 racers took the green flag and most went the first 59 laps problem free before the first red flag was thrown. After the track was cleaned up a few involved cars towed out including the #8 Jeff Remington, another 66 passed before the red came out again at the half way mark.

| |
TQ MIDGETS GO WHEELS OVER WINGS
After going all qualifying laps without a yellow the features started off with the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks and the feature saw Gary Tryon take an early lead for the first 8 laps. After the yellow came out to take the #38 Jamie Sprayson off the track.
| |
SUPER LATES BEAT MOTHER NATURE
The OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model feature was not even a lap old when the red flag came out, as Michel Beyore and Ed Bowlby tangled in turn three, with Bowlby ending up with two wheels atop the wall. Once things got restarted, it was Shane Maginnis who led the way. Maginnis (#03 Kerr Cadillac) would not relinquish the lead until lap forty-one, when eventual winner John Fletcher took over.

| |
VINTAGE MODIFIEDS MIX IT UP
The Canadian Vintage Mods made their first stop to Peterborough Speedway this season and it’s one that Daryl Henwood wont’ forget. Henwood driving the #29 went pretty much from wire to wire to take home the victory. Henwood was able to hold off veteran Brian Atkinson in the #92 and the #0 Phil Shaw to earn his first feature win of the season. It capped off a perfect night for the 28 year old as he also won his heat earlier in the night.
| |
FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT FULL OF FUN
The Hurrican Midgets were the first to hit the track in the features and when it was all over it was the #48 Brian Woodland who was the last to leave as he took the 15 lap victory finishing ahead of the #84 Richard Woodland and the #25 Glen Blaker. Woodland took the lead on lap #7 and never looked once he got out in front.
In the Mini Stock feature Rob Payne started on the pole and stayed out in front for the first 12 laps before Jack Hannah got by him.

| |
TIEMERSMA WINS ALSTAR RACE
Derrick Tiemersma didn’t take over top spot until the fifty-first circuit of the Alstar 75 at Peterborough Speedway, holding off a hard charging Robbie Thompson for the win. Tiemersma started thirteenth in the twenty-one car field. He slowly picked his way through the pack and took over the lead exiting turn four. Richard Holmes (#42 Gormac Roofing Ford) started from the pole and led the Brett Murray (#57 Vidoeflics Ford) took over the spot.
| |
An Action Packed Night to Celebrate Fathers Day
It was another full night of racing at Peterborough Speedway and the Thunder feature saw Donny Beatty take over the lead with only 2 laps to go and go on to take the win. It perhaps was the best finish of the night as Matt Spence had the lead for the first 18 laps but Beattty tracked him down and Spence had this 18th birthday celebrations somewhat spoiled. He did pick up a heat win ealier in the night so I'm sure root beer tasted just fine afterwards.
| |
A HOT NIGHT OF RACING.
On a hot and humid night at Peterborough Speedway, at least four drivers kept their cool enough to take wins in their respective divisions, as Dennis Thompson, Bruce Grimes, John Baker (who also won a make-up feature that was rained out three weeks ago) and Jeremy Gerrow all went home with checkered flags.
| |
LIMITED LATE MODELS TANGLE IT UP
The month of June started off just right for Vic Parsons of Hawkestone Ontario as he drove to victory in 25 lap feature at Peterborough Speedway on June 4th. Parsons who lists his number of years racing as “Too Many” showed patience was a virtue as he watched leaders John Baker Sr. and Craig Graham get tangled up in front of him in the second half of the feature.
| |
FINALLY NO RAIN
Craig Graham was the man to catch this past Saturday in the Limited Late Model division at Peterborough Speedway. Unfortunately for the rest of the field nobody did as the Orono native made it a clean sweep by winning both heats and taking the checkered in the feature as well in the #98 Bill Spencer Pontiac Firebird.
| |
Opening Night a Success
It came a week later than expected but it was worth the wait for Tony Tiemersma along with 3 other feature winners on Opening Night at Peterborough Speedway. After being rained out the week before, Peterborough’s season kick off was raced in near perfect conditions on May 7th and like the weather, Tiemersma was also near perfect when it meant the most.
Tiemersma got the season off to a great start taking the feature in the Limited Late Model Lucas Oil WWS.
