Main Event Fields Set During Second Round of Autumn Colours Classic Qualifying

IMG_3500Only finalizing spots in the feature events remained as second day of action for the 2015 edition of the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing went into the record books – Saturday, October 10th – at Peterborough Speedway.

OSCAAR Super Late Model teams hit Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval for a quartet of qualifying events won by series veteran Charlie Gallant, former NASCAR Canadian Tire Series standout J.R. Fitzpatrick, Kevin Cornelius and Corey Jones. Jody Bound, Jamie Bound and Richard Woodland – each with a pair – and James Stanley took the OSCAAR Midget heats, with the ‘B’ main, last chance qualifier going to Larry Lawson. Jamie Cox and upstart Billy Schwartzenburg captured the Pro Late Model checkered flags.

Chad Strawn and Terry Baker shared the OSCAAR Modified qualifiers. Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model heat races went to Jason Parker, Canadian Motorsports Hall of Famer Stompin’ Tom Walters and Lane Zardo. Peterborough Speedway regular Brandon Hannah, Miles Tyson, James Townsend, Nolan Gould and 2015 Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun track champion Ryan Oosterholt shared the Mini Stock qualifiers. Oosterholt, 2014 Autumn Colours champion Griffin Powell and Jeremy Kelly claimed the 4Fun heat races.

With the 2015 championship on the line, the OSCAAR Midgets came to the stripe 24 strong for their 25 lap feature event. From the drop of the green flag, all eyes were on the tandem of Jamie and Jody Bound. The #83 jumped out to an early lead, only to surrender the point to his brother with a handful of laps on the scoreboard. Just when it looked like a done deal, Jamie Bound mounted a late race charge while working through some lapped traffic and scored another Peterborough Speedway main event win. Richard Woodland was 3rd, with James Rogers and Rob McCall completing the top 5.

A pair of 20 lap ‘B’ main, last chance qualifiers would close out the second night of action and add 8 more drivers to Sunday’s 50 lap main event. Nick Clarke, Dave Watchorn, Dan Demers and Gil Brooks advanced through the first round. Casey Cavanaugh, Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series runner and Peterborough native Mike Nelson, Travis McLean and Stefan Semeraro made the show via the second dance.

Bullring Bullet Points: As the event wore on, the fight for main event starting spots intensified but drivers in each division continued to be relatively well behaved. A few more yellow flags cropped-up during the second day of qualifying, but this year’s edition of the Autumn Colours Classic has been unlike those in previous years…During an OSCAAR Modified heat race, multi-time series and ACC champion Gary McLean made hard contact with the backstretch retaining wall. His #8 machine was towed from the track and all those in attendance thought he may have been finished for the weekend. Just before the last chance races for the Mini Stock division, McLean emerged from the pits and was able to run a few quick laps to test repairs made to the car.

The final day of Peterborough Speedway’s 23rd Annual Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing concludes Sunday, October 11th with feature race events for the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun, Mini Stock, Paul Davis Systems Thunder Car, OSCAAR Modified, Earl Ireland Auto Sales Late Model, OSCAAR Super Late Model and Pro Late Model divisions. Pit gates open at 10:00, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 11:30 and the first Great Canadian RV green flag of the day at 12:30.
