John Baker Jr. Returns to OMRS Victory Lane at Peterborough Speedway

IMG_3892 (2)For the final time of the 2016 season, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – rolled to the green flag – Saturday, August 27th – at Peterborough Speedway to help wrap-up this year’s Hot August Nights Racing Series.

Ontario Legends Series graduate Duane Cinnamon and Chris Burrows paced the field to the line, with Cinnamon jumping out to an early lead in the 25 lap affair. Before a single circuit showed on the scoreboard, the yellow flag was displayed for an incident between the 3rd and 4th turns.

Back under green, the #41 machine of Cinnamon took off again, with Burrows on his back bumper. Each driver has shown some strength during the season, but has yet to seal the deal with a trip to the winner’s circle. With the lead duo doing their best to put some distance on the rest of the field, Rob Warnes – who had scored a main event victory just a week earlier – took over the 3rd spot on lap 4 and John Baker Jr. – the most dominant driver on this year’s tour and the current point leader – moved into 5th spot just 5 laps later.

Cinnamon looked to be well on the way to his first career series checkered flag and closed on the tail-end of the pack as the scoreboard registered 14 laps down. Just 3 laps later, the race’s second and final caution flag flew for a 2 car issue in the 3rd turn. Back under green conditions, Cinnamon again took charge but with the pack bunched-up behind him, his time at the front looked to be running out.

JBJ had been minding his own business and working through traffic, but he gripped the wheel a little tighter and hit the loud pedal a little harder for his late race charge. After following the leader, Baker Jr. grabbed the top spot with 22 laps complete and held on for another trip to victory lane. Stu Robinson Jr., Cinnamon, Rob Warnes and Burrows were next across the line. Ryan Dick, Christopher Mulders, Rick Warnes. Conner James, Randy Hollingsworth, Nick Lees and Willow Barberstock completed the OMRS finishing order.

John Baker Jr. and Stu Robinson Jr. each won a pair of qualifying heat races.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Notebook: For the second event in a row, Alex Lees was missing from action. Unlike the August 20th show at Peterborough, his twin brother Nick wheeled the #07 during the August 27th show…Peterborough Speedway officials observed a moment of silence as a trip to former racer Doug Warnes, who passed away Thursday, August 25th. Warnes was the father of current OMRS official and racer Rick Warnes and the grandfather of racer Rob Warnes.
