Taking the green flag from the inside of the front row may have helped his cause, but Chad Strawn found his latest Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical main event win – Saturday, August 13th – at Peterborough Speedway was hardly a walk in the park.

With an early yellow flag, the 20-lap feature tilt got off to a slower start, but once under green, teams with the series showed they had some serious business on their minds. The driver of the No. 77 machine was still in control of the field on the restart but had some heavy hitters who seemed determined to take over his spot at the front of the pack.

After taking the initial green flag in 9^th spot, John Baker Jr. had worked his way into the runner-up position as the leaders caught the tail-end of the field with about a dozen laps on the scoreboard. Strawn managed to hold the perennial hard charger at bay during the closing stages to make it to victory lane. Ben Gruntz, Rob Richards and Alex Cuzzilla chased the lead duo across the line. Brad Stevenson, Tyler Bouillon, Rick Warnes, Bob Franks, Robert Maebrae and Randy Hollingsworth rounded-out the finishing order.

Even though he scored the race win, in a social media update that also served to thank his sponsors, the driver admitted that his car was less than perfect, “We struggled a bit with the set-up, but had enough to get it to victory lane.”

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: Brad Stevenson returned to the OMRS ranks, wheeling Rob Warnes No. 95 car…Willow Barberstock turned a few laps during the pre-race practice session but her No. 67 machine developed engine problems and she was finished for the night…Millbrook, Ontario’s Robert Maebrae continues to show some strength in his racing return. The former snowmobile racer – who also raced a Thunder Car at Peterborough Speedway in the late 90’s – turned some solid, consistent laps in his No. 57 ride during the 20 lap main event.

It will be a quick turnaround for OMRS teams as the series returns to the venue known as Canada’s Toughest 3^rd Mile Oval – Saturday, August 20^th – for the inaugural Bill Pickford Memorial event to pay tribute to the former racer and club co-founder, who passed away in September of 2019. The series is still offering the opportunity to purchase lap sponsorships for the marquee event. Details can be found on the group’s Facebook page.
