Celebrating Canada Day With Short Track Style at Peterborough Speedway

As the Nation celebrated its152nd birthday, the 52nd consecutive season of action at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road continued – Saturday, June 29th – for final night of racing of the month at Peterborough Speedway.

Steve Powell and Mark Gordon brought the Late Model field from the staging area for their 20 lap feature. Powell – who has been looking for some good luck with his #72 ride – took the lead early, with Jack Morgan slipping into the runner-up spot. Dan McHattie used the outside line to take the lead from Powell with 5 circuits on the board, with the race’s only yellow flying a lap later for an issue in the 2nd turn. Newcomer Jordan Latimer was paying attention to McHattie, as he took to the top side of the track and was in a group of 4 cars who worked their way around Powell. Point leader McHattie took another checkered flag, with Latimer, Gordon, Brandon Feeney and Morgan were next across the line.

With Nolan Gould and Jeremy Kelly on the front row, the Jiffy Lube Mini Stocks came to the line 18 strong for a 20 lap main event. The duo ran side-by-side through the race’s early stages, before Gould broke away and James Townsend took 2nd from Kelly. Townsend grabbed the lead from Gould following a lap 7 caution, with Gould closing on the leader with a dozen laps in the book. Slower traffic came into play with less a handful of laps remaining and the pair made contact as they exited the 4th turn. With a green, white, checkered finish needed to wrap things up, Jeremy Kelly claimed the win over Ryan Oosterholt, Ember Junkin, Neil Hannah and Tiffany Vanderbelt.

25 starters took the green flag for the www.trailersplus.net Ontario Legends Series National Qualifier. Miles Tyson out-dragged his front row partner Cole McFadden for the early lead in the 30 lap affair. An early yellow flag – with just a single lap on the board – slowed the pace, with Kevin Foisy moving into the 3rd spot a lap after the restart. With a long green flag stage developing, the leaders caught the tail-end of the field with about 7 laps complete. The next yellow waved with 19 laps down and Foisy took over the runner-spot a lap later. Another yellow for an issue on the backstretch created a 5 lap trophy dash that saw Foisy take the win. Tyson and Andre Fiorini – who were running 2nd and 3rd at the time – made hard contact with the front stretch wall, just as Foisy crossed the line. Kenny McNicol Jr., Dave Riopelle, Adam Cuthbertson and Paul Pierik completed the top 5. Foisy earned the Masters’ division qualifying spot, with Connor James taking the Semi Pro honours. The Pro division qualifier was Adam Cuthbertson.

With 20 laps to settle the score, Mark Gordon and Tyler Bouillon brought the KOD Disposal Super Stock pack to the Great Canadian RV green flag. Gordon took the lead early – building-up a 5 car length advantage over Dan Archibald running 2nd. A backstretch issue brought out the yellow flag and Archibald tool the lead on the lap 10 restart. Another caution – with 7 laps remaining – brought the field back together and gave everyone a last chance at the hard-charger at the front of the pack. Tyler Bouillon got close in the closing stages, but not close enough as the driver of the #07 took the win. Gordon, Marlie Owen and Howie Crowe rounded-out the top 5.

Malcolm ‘Pops’ MacDonald and Sean Kennedy were on the front row for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock 20 lap feature. Kennedy took the lead from the outside lane and looked to be on the way to his second win of the year, as he caught some slower traffic with just over 6 laps on the board. A lap 9 incident on the backstretch created a yellow flag and made it a brand new race. Kennedy now had Chris Tubman and reigning track champion Ryan Oosterholt in his rear-view mirror. Oosterholt took the runner-up spot in lapped traffic and when the race’s final yellow waved on lap 17, he set his sights on Kennedy. Try as he might, the former karter couldn’t hold back the charge, as the #79 machine grabbed the win with a last lap pass. Kennedy, Tubman, Steve Finnegan and Rob Crick completed the top 5.

Dan McHattie and Jordan Latimer shared the Late Model qualifiers, with Jeremy Kelly taking a pair of Mini Stocks heats, while the others went to Nolan Gould. Tyler Bouillon had a couple of Super Stock preliminary wins, with Mark Gordon and Dan Archibald taking the others. Parker Traves, Cole McFadden with a pair, Miles Tyson, Paul Pierik and Kevin Foisy were the Ontario Legends Series heat winners. Checkered flags in the Bone Stocks went to Chris Tubman, Dave Marco, Angelo Novis, Ryan Oosterholt, Rob Crick and Isaiah Switzer.

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post-race technical inspection.
