LUCAS OIL 100

Mother nature provided a picture perfect night for racing at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, July 6th as Canada’s Fastest 1/3 Mile Oval teamed up with Lucas Oil to present a thrilling night of stock car racing. The For Fun, Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, and Legends all entertained the large crowd at Peterborough Speedway before the Late Models put the finishing touches on what proved to be an incredibly entertaining night of racing as the ended the night with a 100-lap feature!
The For Fun Class, Peterborough Speedway’s entry level division, ran four qualifying races before their final feature race of the night. In the five races, there were five different winners as Brandon Hannah, Terry Hubbert, Andy McCann, and Nick Lees all hoisted the checkered flag in the heat races before Trevor Logan stole the show and won the feature race. Trailing Wayne Dewdney for the first 14 laps of the 20-lap race, Logan made a bold pass that saw himself, along with Dewdney and another driver, go three-wide into turn #1; however, the risky move paid off as Logan emerged in the lead and didn’t look back! Dewdney finished fourth in the feature behind Hubbert and Lance Foster who finished second and third respectively.
The Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks also ran four heats before their feature race, and again, there were five different drivers who raised the checkered flag. Scott Jacobs, driving a 1991 Mustang sponsored by Auto Parts Extra, won the first heat while Mike Wallace, Neil Hannah, and Justin Bierworth won the other three. Hannah settled for fourth in the feature, and Bierworth finished a solid second, but it was the #4 car of Andrew Swindells who moved into first on the third lap and never looked back, hanging on to take the win!
Foss Transport brought the Legend division to the crowd at Peterborough Speedway and the night belonged to ‘Dandy’ Andy Warbutton who was victorious in the first heat race and was able to fend off Bill Mason in the feature. “We’ve been finishing second and third all season, so it’s really nice to win especially at Peterborough [Speedway],” said an elated Warbutton after the race. “Bruce Grimes has been racing so well…and Bill Mason had a great race today,” said Warbutton who explained that his Betz Pools car #24 had been running great all season. The first two laps of the feature were filled with lead changes and caution flags, before Warbutton took the lead and the field calmed down, racing the remaining 23 laps without any problems. Tim Fernandes, Bruce Grimes, and Kevin Fletcher also won heat races.
The Late Models stole the show at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, running four qualifying heats before a 100-lap feature capped off the intense night of racing. Amanda Connelly led for the first 76 laps with Craig Graham hot on her tail the whole time. On lap 76 Graham made his move and passed Connelly around turn #4. It was green-flag racing until lap 95 when Connelly drew a caution flag because of smoke pouring out of the hood of her car. Connelly was forced to pit and was unable to return to finish the race. That left Graham the green light to take the checkered flag as Brandon Watson and Charlie Gallant sat in second and third respectively on the restart. Gallant made a move with only 2 laps remaining and overtook young Watson to finish second with Watson taking the bronze medal. On behalf of all the drivers, fans, and staff at Peterborough Speedway, a big thank-you to Steve Snowden and the Lucas Oil team for helping create an electrifying night of racing at the oval.
The Peterborough Speedway Kidz Club was also in full swing on Saturday as kids of all ages enjoyed barrel races during the intermission. Ken Chandress of Courtice was the winner of the Villa Auto Wash ‘Dirtiest Car in the Parking Lot’ contest and the Shriners Hospital 50/50 Winner left with over $250!
