A WILD FINISH TO A FULL NIGHT

Points racing resumed at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, May 24th as five different classes of cars took to Canada’s fastest 1/3 mile oval under gorgeous blue skies and sunshine. The excitement began from the first green flag and finished with one of the most spectacular conclusions in recent memory.
The For Funs, Peterborough Hyundai Ministocks, Legends, and Late Models joined the TQ Midgets who made their first of three appearances at Peterborough Speedway this racing season. Wayne Dewdney dominated the heat races in the For Fun class, but settled for third place in the feature. Peterborough native Brandon Hannah finished second in the feature, just behind Terry Hubbert who finished first in the feature after finishing in last place in the second heat race!
In the Peterborough Hyundai Ministock division, four different drivers won each of the four heat races. Mike Wallace, a rookie racer who literally grew up spending all his time at Peterborough Speedway, won the first Ministock heat race of the night. Jason Juriga, Paul Hannah, and Scott Jacobs won the other three heats. In the feature Wallace took the lead and never looked back, taking his first feature win of the 2008 season! Hannah and Bobby Love rounded out the top three respectively.
The Late Models were well represented at Peterborough Speedway on May 24 as well, but one driver stood above the rest at the end of the night. Craig Graham’s 2007 Chevrolet, sponsored by Enniskillen General Store and P.J. Larkin Salvage, took three different checkered flags on the night. Winning both heats, Graham took the lead ten laps into the feature and fought well to keep it as several caution flags brought the rest of the pack closer several times before the 25 lap race ended. Other heat winners included Larry Crowe Jr. and Tim Burke.
The Legend series took to the asphalt at Peterborough Speedway as well with track veterans such as Bruce Grimes, Andy Warbutton, Tim Fernandes, and Adam Cuthbertson looking to take the points championship this season at the oval. Grimes won his first heat and settled for third in the second as Cuthbertson took the checkered. Justin Cuthbertson also won a heat race as well as Nicole Yarrow, but it was Grimes who held on for the victory in the feature, followed by Adam Cuthbertson, Warbutton, and Fernandes respectively.
After running their heat races with relatively smooth and uninterrupted green-flag racing, the TQ Midgets provided fans with a frightening finish to the night of racing. After completing the first lap of the feature, a single driver lost control and caused a chain reaction of accidents right at the START/FINISH line. When the dust settled, no less than a dozen caused were directly involved and the St. John’s ambulance crew got their first serious call of duty for the season. Luckily, nobody was seriously injured, but a number of the vehicles sustained major damage. Moreover, the combination of time and the number of cars that weren’t race ready after the crash forced the conclusion of the night of racing without a checkered flag being awarded to any driver for the TQ Midgets! Luckily for fans and drivers alike, the TQ Midgets return to Peterborough in just three weeks, as they will headline racing on June 14.
Next week brings a full slate of action to Peterborough Speedway when the For Funs, Peterborough Hyundai Ministocks, and Late Models, will be joined by the Renegade Truck series! Pit gates open at 3:00pm, Spectator Gates at 5:00pm and the first green flag drops at 6:00pm. Bring the family down for a night of guaranteed entertainment at Peterborough Speedway!
