Grand Opening !!
What an opening night ! A full grandstand of stock car fans, some great heat racings and even better features. Throw in a some fan appreciation at the intermission and it was the perfect way to kick start the 2008 season at Peterborough Speedway. In fact it wasn’t just opening night it was the 41st opening night at what is considered Canada’s toughest 1/3 banked oval. Perhaps the most exciting race of the night was the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stock feature that saw a total of 3 different leaders over the 20 laps including early leader Scott Jacobs. Jacobs however was eventually passed by rookie Mike Wallace in the #27 Honda. If the name and the number look familiar they should as Mike is the son of Kim Wallace who ran his number 27 cars to many checkered flags at Peterborough Speedway over the years. The 27 year old auto body worker almost pulled of winning his first ever feature race but with just a few laps to go his teammate Darrah “Too” Moroney took the lead and hung on for a dramatic finish. For Moroney and his Better Floorz / Boston Pizza team, it was a clean sweep as he also won both his heats. Jacobs settled for third in the feature. Bruce Grimes took the lead early in the 25 lap Ontario Legends feature and never looked back. He finished ahead of Andy Warbutton who took second. Grimes also won a heat earlier in the night. Tom Walters in his familiar number 47 drove to victory in the Late Model feature. Walters was able to pass the likes of John Baker Jr. and Dwayne Baker to secure the win. Baker finished in second spot while Baker Jr. in fact picked up the DNF after some issues late in the race that forced him into the pits. Amanda Connolly rounded out the podium. In the 4 Fun division 2007 Champ Bernie Vanderzwet picked up where he left off as he drove to a win. Nathan Mitchell won the King of the Hill with a time of 21.03 seconds in his 93 Ford Mustang.
