ACTION RETURNS KICKING OFF THE RUN INTO THE AUTUMN COLOURS

Peterborough Speedway had a weekend loaded with racing excitement on September 15th and 16th. After a break in the action in stock car racing the week before, drivers flocked to Peterborough Speedway on the 15th to compete for points and pride as the racing season is in its final weeks! The For Funs, Late Models, Legends, and Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks all took to the track to battle for positions in the points standings.
In the For Fun Division, Bernie Vanderzwet was attempting to make a charge for the top spot in points standings, and started the n ight out perfect, winning both heat races. The feature entertained fans as two cars battled it out the entire race – the #00 of Donna Anderson and the #48 of Wyatt Harvey. Despite trailing Anderson for most of the race, Harvey finally made his move on the last lap and stole the checkered flag! Anderson finished a close second, while Terry Hubberd took the bronze. Vanderzwet finished fourth and Brandon Hannah rounded out the top five.
There were 14 Late Model drivers at Canada’s fastest 1/3 mile oval on Saturday night, and four different drivers won heat races. Randy Bull, Jimmy Feeney, Larry Crowe Jr., and Dwayne Fulford all took checkered flag in heat races. During the feature, when it all counted, it was Bull who stole the show. Bull took advantage of some yellow flags and combined that with superior driving to win the feature, followed by Crowe and Fulford who finished second and third respectively.
Sunoco Lubricants sponsored the Legend racing at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night, and again four different drivers won heat races! The story of the night was Legend veteran Adam Cuthbertson, who found himself driving a different car than he is used to. In a blue #15 instead of his red #79, Cuthbertson didn’t seem to have much trouble making the switch, winning the first heat of the night! Tim Fernandes, Bruce Grimes, and Andy Warbutton also won heat races, and Grimes went on to win the feature! Bill Mason, Warbutton, Kevin Foisy, and Fernandes rounded out the top five.
The Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks also put on a show on Saturday night. Bob Tolton, son of Late Model driver Tim Tolton, won the first heat in his Black Magic Racing #13. Jack Hannah, Mike Nelson, and Robert Kerr won the following heats which will make for an interesting finish in the points race for the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks in the coming weeks! When the main events came, it was Hannah who beat the rest of the pack to take the checkered flag in the feature. Hannah’s son and fellow racer, Neil Hannah, also got a flag in the race, but his was a black flag for aggressive and dangerous driving. Not one to lose his sense of humour, Neil came to the finish line to greet his dad and took part in the photo session. While Jack held the checkered flag, Neil stood beside him holding the black! During intermission, the Peterborough Speedway Kids Club enjoyed Kids Rides where kids of all ages got to ride a lap with their favourite driver! Also, the King of the Hill competition, which allows fans to take to the track in their own cars for a time trial, and for the first time all season, last week’s winner was clocked at under 20 seconds!
