OSCAAR TOPS OFF LABOURDAY WEEKEND
After rain cancelled racing at Peterborough Speedway on August 25th, the stock car excitement resumed on September 1st with a night packed with entertainment. The OSCAAR Super Late Models were in town along with the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Late Models, and For Fun drivers and the evening started with a huge pre-race corn roast for fans and racers alike! Also, it was Peterborough Speedway sponsor appreciation night, with Pinegrove Park staff as the guests of honour! In the For-Fun Division, three different drivers held the checkered flag throughout the night. Terry Hubberd won the first heat in his #31, Wyatt Harvey in the #48 won the second heat, but when it all mattered most, points contender Bernie Vanderzvet took the checkered flag in the feature driving his sunset coloured #15. Similar to the For Funs, the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks also saw different drivers win each of their five races. In the heat races, Scott Jacobs new #91 is still running extremely well and as a result, Jacobs took the first heat. Speedway veteran and points contender, Jack Hannah won the second heat, while Mark Lavalle and Andrew Swindells traded wins in the final two heats. The feature was an entertaining race, and when it was all said and done, Robert Kerr took the checkered flag followed by Jacobs and Lavalle who finished second and third respectively. At the beginning of the year, the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks appeared to be a three-horse race between Riley Ekins, Jack Hannah, and Robert Kerr; however heading into last Saturday’s racing, Scott Jacobs sat atop the points standings! Look for Jacobs to make for a real exciting and interesting finish for the Mini Stocks this season! In the Peterborough Speedway Late Model division, again four different drivers won each of the four heats. Newcomer Randy Bull is proving to be a contender as he won his first ever heat race in the Late Model division. Don Hart won the second heat, while John Pollock in his #9 Bill Storey Pontiac machine took the checkered flag in the third heat of the night. In the final Late Model heat, Guelph native Tim Tolton was victorious as he continues to press for the top spot in the overall points standings. The Late Model feature was exciting as the best drivers in the class battled for positions and points the entire race! In the end, Don Hart took the checkered flag, followed by Dwayne Fulford, and Tolton who rounded out the top three. The OSCAAR Super Late Models always put on an incredible show packed with speed and sound, and Saturday night was no exception! The 75-lap feature was full of excitement as Stu Robinson Jr. began in the lead until a spin-out on lap six, when Pee Wee Evans took over top-spot. Evans looked poised to capture the checkered flag; however he wound up with a black flag because his car problems made it unsafe for him to continue racing. That opened the door for the #61 of John Fletcher in his JNE Consulting car who not only took the lead, but ran some of the fastest laps of the entire race for the last ten laps to take the checkered flag in his third win of the season! Despite being involved in the spinout with Robinson on lap six, Rob Clarke worked his way back into contention until lap 57 when Al Shepstone and Clarke were involved in another collision and sent to the back of the pack. Both drivers pitted for new tires and with the help of some caution flags combined with exceptional driving, Clarke and Shepstone crawled back to the front of the pack, finishing second and third respectively behind Fletcher. Racing action continued on Sunday as Villa Auto Wash teamed up with Cathcart Trucking to present the fourth round of the Enduro Series racing at Peterborough Speedway. Over 30 cars were in attendance and this race will go down in history as the fastest Enduro race ever at Peterborough Speedway as the red flag dropped just once! At the end of the 250-lap marathon, Colin Winslow won his second Enduro race of the season in his #77! Willie Reyns, Dave Caldwell, Andre Reyns, and Nathan Mitchell rounded out the top five. For information on the fifth and final Enduro race of the season, check out the website at www.peterboroughspeedway.com or stop by the Souvenir Booth at the racetrack for information on all upcoming events, including the snowmobile and ATV radar runs scheduled for later in the 2007 year! Peterborough Speedway takes the week off for September 8th, but the action kicks into full gear again on September 15th, as racers in all divisions will battle for points and prestige in the final weeks of racing during Peterborough Speedway’s 40th Anniversary season!
