FIRST TIME FEATURE WINNERS
It was an action packed night of racing at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, August 18th. The Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, For Funs, Late Models, and Legends all hit the track to entertain fans at Canada’s Fastest 1/3 Mile Oval! In the Mini Stock Division, Scott Jacobs stole the show in his new #91 car. Jacobs won his first heat of the night and went on to take the checkered flag again for the feature with Robert Kerr and Riley Ekins finishing inches behind him! Jacobs says his car is running at peak performance and is a considerable improvement over his old machine. The For Fun Division featured two heats before the feature race and there were three different winners. Wayne Dewdney and Wyatt Harvey exchanged heat victories before the #00 of Donna Anderson stole the show in the feature. It was Anderson’s second feature win of the year, her first coming on her anniversary night a few weeks ago, and the win helped her climb the ladder toward Bernie Vanderzwet who currently leads the points standings in the For Fun Division. Vanderzwet finished second, ahead of Terry Hubbard who rounded out the top three in the feature race. The Late Models were shaping up to be a one-man show on Saturday night, as Dwayne Fulford won the checkered flag in both of his heats. Larry Crowe Jr. and Don Hart also won heat races, but from the drop of the green flag in the feature, it was Crowe who took the lead and never looked back. He won his first ever feature race, and did so by nearly a quarter of a lap! Fulford, despite a valiant effort, could not get through the pack of cars he was mixed up with, and would have to settle for sixth. Hart won the battle for second by a nose length over John Pollock, as Nick Oram and Tim Tolton rounded out the top five respectively. The Legends were back at the track after providing fans with the most spectatular accident of the year last week! This week, however, the cars stayed where they belong – on the track! The Legends raced four heats and one feature, and had five different drivers capture the checkered flag. Bruce Grimes, Jason Tomlinson, Bill Mason, and Chris Maracle all won heat races, before the #79 of Adam Cuthbertson stole what turned out to be an incredible feature race. Cuthbertson had his car running extremely well, and with 23 of 25 laps in the books, he had built a comfortable lead. On lap 23, however, a mix-up between turns 1 and 2 brought out the caution flag and the gap between Cuthbertson and the rest of the pack had vanished. ‘Dandy’ Andy Warbutton sat in second place and throughout the last two laps did all he could to make a pass, but Cuthbertson defended his lead perfectly and held on for the win. Car football followed the racing activities, the Faster Pastor race entertained fans at intermission, and the Peterborough Speedway Kids Club were on a Race Mission to complete a scavenger hunt. The TQ Midgets are back in town next Saturday along with a 50-lap Late Model feature. Pit Gates open at 2:00pm, spectator gates at 5:00pm, and the racing starts at 6:00pm.
