OSCAAR ROCKS PETERBOROUGH
The warm weather and long weekend helped with an incredible weekend of racing at Peterborough Speedway. The excitement began at 6:00pm Saturday night when the OSCAAR Super Late Models made their first appearance at Peterborough Speedway this season, and the weekend events concluded on Sunday afternoon following the third of five installments of the Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series. On Saturday night, Peterborough Speedway hosted the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Late Models, Hurricane Midgets, and the OSCAAR Super Late Models. In four heats the Mini Stocks had four different winners; Dan Demers, Mark Lavalle, Wayne Croft, and Tyler Junkin. So when the checkered flag dropped for the feature, it was anyone’s race. Despite sitting first, second, and third in the points race, Robert Kerr, Jack Hannah, and Riley Ekins did not capture a win during the heats; however, when it really mattered, it was Ekins who stole the show. Ekins won the feature to increase his overall points and really heat up the standings. Ekins, Hannah, and Kerr are now only a handful of points away from each other atop the Mini Stock standings! The Late Models took to the track next, and unlike the Mini Stocks, the Late Models were dominated by two drivers: Dwayne Fulford and Tony Tiemersma. Tiemersma has been on a tear lately in his lucky #7 car, and August 4th was no exception. He won both of his heats and came literally inches away from taking the flag in the feature, leaving fans on the edge of their seats the entire race. Tiemersma was trying to catch Dwayne Fulford in his #56 machine, who has also been red hot of late. Fulford won his first heat and hung on by a thread to take the checkered flag in the feature! The Hurricane Midgets also entertained the crowd at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night. So far this year it has been the #67 of Cale Bailey who has dominated the Midgets at Peterborough Speedway. Bailey had won both features in the two visits the series had made so far this season to Canada’s Fastest 1/3 Mile Oval, however, he would fail to ‘three-peat’. Bailey started like a house on fire, winning both of his heats as Brian Woodland and Matt Barton each won heats as well. When the green flag dropped for the feature, it was Jack Swanston who stole the show. Swantson dominated the race, and stole the checkered flag from Barton and Bailey, who finished second and third respectively. The most exciting race of the night belonged to the OSCAAR Super Late Models who ran a 50-lap feature that lasted until just before 11:00pm. Prior to the feature, the #68 of Stu Robinson Jr. from Holland Landing, the #22 of Glenn Watson from Barrie, and the #15 driven by Al Shepstone of Little Britain all won heats. When it was all on the line, it was Milton native John Fletcher who took the pot, winning the 50-lap feature followed by Rob Clark and Shepstone, who finished second and third. Peterborough Speedway would like to thank OSCAAR and their clothing sponsor Fast Eddie Racewear for provided fans and staff alike with an incredible show! At intermission, dozens of kids took part in the Kids Club Barrel Races and Team #82 provided awesome giveways which included two DVD players and a brand new 18-speed bike, and the 50-50 winner took home $400! On Sunday, nearly 30 cars took part in the third installment of the Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series at Peterborough Speedway. This 250-lap event is an awesome events for drivers and fans, and while speed is essential, endurance is the key element to success. Starting at the start of the pack is not usually the key for success, as the race lasts 250 laps; however, it worked on Sunday for the #77 of Colin Winslow who led from start to finish, taking the checkered flag in this difficult style of racing. Winslow, who is sponsored by Parkway Radiator and Transmission, had his car running at peak performance for the entire race; however, with roughly 50 laps left, his suspension seemed to loosen and his car remained on a permanent angle. Despite that, Winslow hung on for the victory, as Dave Caldwell, and Scarborough native Jamie Ridgeway rounded out the top three. Also, Have Bus Will Travel was on hand to provide a lucky fan with a $1200 prize. The company specializes in bus tours to local race events, as well as NASCAR and BUSCH series events all across North America. For more information on how to take advantage of their unbelievable rates and company information, check them out on the web at www.havebus.com.
