MID SEASON CHMAPIONSHIPS FULL OF ACTION
This past Saturday Peterborough Speedway played host to it’s Mid Season Championship presented by Country 105. The night featured extra laps and extra points up for grabs as well as a visit from the Cup Lites. Perfect weather conditions greeted the racers as they headed out to the track. Rain was in the forecast and was a threat all day but never a factor. As well as the Cup Lites, the Ontario Legends joined in on the action along with all regular classes including Late Models, Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks and the 4Funs. Heading into the Mid Season Championship, the #91 Don Hart was the points leader and was pumped and ready to go for a big night. Hoping to say goodbye to the first half with a feature win Hart found himself in the position of having to piece back his machine piece by piece as Hart went hard into the wall coming out turn 4 during his 2nd qualifying heat. Mike Johnson who captures all the action on tape reports that Hart had over 6 different crews helping him put the race car back together in time to at least take the green and gain valuable points in the feature. The crew that helped out the most and probably with out these guys Donny would've been done for the night was the crew and driver of the #00 car Nick Oram. Many predicted despite the help, there was no way the damage done during qualifying could be fixed in time to race next week let along in a few hours, but Hart not only made it out for the Late Model feature, he finished the race. In the end it was Tim Tolton of Guelph Ontario who took the feature and closed in on Hart by doing so in the points. The Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stock feature perhaps was the best of the year especially the first half of the race as the drivers raced wheel to wheel vying for top spot. Jack Hannah who was celebrating his 40th Birthday, was the points leader going into the Mid Season Championship and although he ran pretty good, he was a non factor when it came down to the winners. The feature winner ended up being newcomer Todd Musker in the #53. The Ontario Legends feature got off to a bang of a start when on the opening lap the #88 Bruce Grimes was in the wrong place at the wrong time and crashed hard down the back just out of turn 2. Grimes night came to and end thanks in part to the #23 Chris Maracle getting loose and out of control in front of him which led to Grimes having no where to go but into the pits for the rest of the night. Jason Tomlinson in the #02 would go on to win the 25 lap feature driving a perfect race to pick up his first ever feature win. As far as the 4Funs division is concerned another newcomer to the field went away with the feature win. Driving the #31 machine, Terry Hubbard was dialed in and cruised to victory. “I recommend to anyone getting involved in this division, I had a blast putting this car together and it cost pennies really so come on out” Hubbard told the crowd afterwards. Big Dave Whittaker out of West Seneca N.Y. won the Cup Lites feature. Whittaker drove the #13 car to victory in the 50 lap feature that look less than 15 minutes to complete. The King of the Hill winner was Tyler Junkin who drove his 1984 Pontiac Fiero to victory in a time of 20.64 seconds. Fans enjoyed watching the action including Larry Crowe Sr. who drove a Hummer around in a time of 23.95 seconds.
