OSS HITS THE HIGH BANKS AT PETERBOROUGH

After rain cancelled the action at Peterborough Speedway on July 14th, racing resumed on the 21st and what a night of racing it was! The line-up featured the For Fun Division, the Legends, the Hurricane Midgets, and the Canadian Sportsmen Series made their stop at Peterborough Speedway which was highlighted by two awesome fifty-lap features!
The Hurricane Midgets were the first to hit the track, and they put on a great show for the largest crowd at Peterborough Speedway so far this year. Matthew Barton was a heat winner which helped move him up on the points standings, but it was Cale Bailey who stole the show later in the feature. Bailey has now won two consecutive features at Peterborough Speedway this summer, and three in a row overall! Bailey and Barton both had their cars running at peak performance, and during the feature, the two drivers exchanged leads several times until Bailey passed with only a couple of laps remaining and held on for the win.
The For Fun Division had its largest turnout of the 2007 season on Saturday night. Regular drivers such as Bernie Vanderzwet, Wyatt Harvey, and Donna Anderson were joined by Bill Goddard, Terry Hubbard, Wayne Dudny, and a couple of Mini Stock regulars, Scott Jacobs and Riley Ekins. Ekins is currently in a heated race with Jack Hannah and Robert Kerr for the lead in Mini Stock points; however, he may want to reconsider racing in the For Fun Division. Ekins took a heat and, at the very last turn of the feature, passed Wyatt Harvey to take the checkered flag in the 20 lap showdown as well. Vanderzwet also won a heat to remain atop the points standing for his division. When asked if he would consider driving a Legend or Late Model later in the season, Ekins simply answered, “I’d love to!”
The Legends hit the track next, and Tim Fernandes picked up where he last left off at Peterborough Speedway. On July 7th, 2007 – which was the seventh day of the seventh month of the 2007th year – Fernandes (who drives car #77) won his first heat of the season. He picked up right where he left off, winning another heat on Saturday the 21st. The feature was highlighted by a crash on lap 14 when Andy Warbutton was in the lead, with Bruce Grimes right behind him. Although not involved in the crash, Warbutton headed into the pits for some technical work, which may have cost him the race. On the restart, he was at the back of the pack, and although he worked his way back into second, Bruce Grimes was unchallenged and easily took the checkered flag!
The Ontario Sportsman Series (OSS) stopped at Peterborough Speedway also on July 21st. Rather than run heats, the drivers compete in time trial where each car runs two laps. The drivers’ time for these laps determines their position in the feature race. Fans enjoyed not one, but TWO 50-lap features from the OSS on Saturday. The winner of the first was Shawn McGlynn in his red and white #81, who was followed for most of the race by the #80 of Mike Hryniuk. Despite finishing second, Hryniuk had some transmission problems late in the race, and in between feature, had to completely replace his transmission! He did, but it was no help in the second feature as it was the #28 car of Steve Robblee who stole the show. McGlynn was knocked out of contention on lap 14 when he, along with a couple other cars, spun out right at the Start/Finish line which brought out the caution. Peterborough Speedway would like to thank the Ontario Sportsman Series, along with Fast Eddie Racewear for bringing excellent and exciting racing to Canada’s Fastest 1/3 Mile Oval!
The Peterborough Speedway Kids Club also participated in the excitement with Bike Races at intermission, which were followed by tons of prizes and giveaways from Pepsi, Castrol, and the OSS.
Construction is complete at Peterborough Speedway’s new track, located right behind the asphalt. The Dirt Track includes bumps and jumps and will play host to several events throughout the rest of the season. Racing resumes at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, July 28th for the Country 105.1 FM Mid Season Championship.
