Late Models battle it out for 50 laps

On Saturday, July 7th, Peterborough Speedway celebrated the seventh day of the seventh month of the year 2007 in a very lucky fashion. Not only did fans enjoy a great night of racing from the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, For Funs, Legends, and Late Models, but the theme of ‘seven’ added to the excitement throughout the entire night!
It started out as a lucky night for Wyatt Harvey in the For Fun Division, as Harvey stole the checkered flag in the first heat of the night. Bernie Vanderzwet, way ahead in the point standings finished third, but went on to take the win in both the second heat and the feature, with Harvey finishing second in both.
For the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, it was Bob Tolton who took the win in the first heat, Riley Ekins in the second, Wayne Croft captured the checkered flag in the third heat, while Jack Hannah in car #27 took the win in the final heat of the night. During the feature, it was Ekins who won when in counted as his purple and yellow Tryon Masonry car took the win by a longshot over Croft, who finished a respectable second.
The Legends also had four different heat winners, Andy Warbutton, Bruce Grimes and Frank Johnston won the first three, while Tim Fernandes took his first checkered flag of the year while driving car #77! The feature kept fans on the edge of their seats, and when the checkered flag dropped, it went to Warbutton, who finally took his first checkered flag of the season at Peterborough Speedway. Paul Pierik, Adam Cuthbertson, Grimes, and Johnston rounded out the top five for the feature respectively.
The Late Models entertained the crowd with a 50-lap feature that saw 7 different caution flags for 7 different accidents, none of which were too serious. Also, before the feature, the Late Models had four different heat winners as well. Vic Parsons, 00??, Tony Tiemersma (who also drives #7), and Tim Tolton all won the features, and to keep pace with the lucky number 7, it was Tiemersma who stole the show in the feature after moving up from third when Don Hart and Tom Walters bumped on lap 48 while sitting in first and second place at the time!
The Kids Club welcomed back the Peterborough Speedway Barrel Races at intermission, and some of the staff even took part! The night concluded with the second round of the Gauntlet Race at Peterborough Speedway this season. Mini Stock driver Riley Ekins took the wheel of the Speedway Bus while three cars all worked together in an effort to take him out before he finished ten laps! In the first installment of the Gauntlet Race, the bus only made it to lap 2; however, Ekins is a Speedway veteran and fought off his opponents to finish the entire race . . . although there were a few close calls!
Racing resumes at Peterborough Speedway next Saturday, July 14th when the TQ Midgets return to Canada’s Fastest 1/3 Mile Banked Asphalt Oval.
