Canada Day Long Weekend

The Canada Day Long Weekend brought along two great days of racing here at Peterborough Speedway. Just before the first green flag dropped on Saturday, it looked like the rain would fall any second; however, it blew by us and the sun stayed out as Schneiders presented a great race lineup at the track! The For Funs, Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks and Late Models and took to the track, along the Cup Lites from the United States who made their first stop at Canada’a Fastest 1/3 Mile Oval this season.
In the For Fun Division, Bernie Vanderzwet continued his dominance, winning both heats and the feature to increase his lead in the overall points standings. Donna Anderson finished second in the first heat. But would settle for 3rd in both the second heat and the feature, as Wyatt Harvey finished 2nd in both. Ayrren Hart is expecting to have his orange #56 back up and running within a couple weeks as it’s been sidelined since Hart crashed four weeks ago.
In the Mini Stock Division, four different drivers won heats; Bob Tolton, Jack Hannah, Dan Demers, and Andrew Swindells. Hannah finished second behind Swindells in their second heat, but fought his way to the front of the pack to take the checkered flag in the feature. Riley Ekins, Robert Kerr, Swindells, and Wayne Croft rounded out the top five in the feature respectively.
John Pollock seems to have his car running at peak performance. After struggling to match the speed and endurance of the other Late Models earlier in the season, Pollock has been a frontrunner the previous two weeks. On Saturday, it looked as though Pollock was ready to dominate, taking the checkered flag in the first heat; however, he had some troubles in the second heat as well as the feature. Don Hart was the winner of the second heat, and despite a number of passing attempts, Hart couldn’t catch Dwayne Fulford who held the lead and took the win in the feature.
The Cup Lites ran only two heats before intermission, but entertained fans in their 50 lap feature. The cars are built with sled engines and aside from differences in body colour, all cars are virtually identical mechanically. In the end, it was Scott Wiley who took the win in the feature. The Cup Lites will return to the Peterborough Speedway later this season, and for full details, check out the website at

It was also a Fan Appreciation Night at Peterborough Speedway where all drivers park on the track during intermission and fans get a chance to meet them face to face and get to know them even better. The drivers had candy, toys, pictures, and lots of other freebies for the fans, and there were hats, shirts, and other giveaways following, courtesy of Pepsi, Pennzoil, Schnieders, and Peterborough Speedway. As if the night wasn’t packed enough with entertainment, the Peterborough Speedway Kids Club had a double shot of excitement themselves. First, there was a race mission for the kids which allowed them to earn another ballot for the end of the year Grand Prize of a brand new Bike, and there were also Box Car Races at intermission!
On Sunday, July 1st, Peterborough Speedway celebrated Canada’s birthday with the second of five Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series races. Like all races, speed and technique are key, but with the Enduro Series, endurance is the foundation for success. Roughly forty cars took to the track on Sunday for the 250 lap event, which was highlighted by a wall-crawling crash early in the race as a car nearly skipped over the wall and into the fence! That brought out one of only a handful of red flags, and when it was all over, it was Andre Reyns of Baltimore, Ontario who captured the checkered flag! There are 3 more Enduro Series Races coming up this season at Peterborough Speedway, and for information on all events scheduled for 2007, check out www.peterboroughspeedway.com. Racing resumes next Saturday, July 7th when the For Funs, Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Late Models, and Legends will hit the track along with the second Gauntlet Race of the season and Kids Barrel Races. Pit Gates open at 4:00pm, Spectator Gates at 6:00pm, and the first green flag drops at 7:00pm! Don’t forget to check out the Peterborough Speedway Souvenir Booth for photos, track information, upcoming events, and Kids Club Activities!
