Racing And A Game Of Football
The weather was perfect for racing at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, June 23rd, and the racing was too…almost. The yellow flagged stayed locked up until the final feature heat of the night when the Hurricane Midgets ran into some track trouble, but aside from that, the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Late Models, and For Funs ran all of their races clean and green. The action began at 7:00pm and Robert Kerr finished a spot away from the Speedway Hat Trick. Kerr and his #35 machine finished second in his first heat behind Jack Hannah, but went on to take the checkered flag in his second heat as well as the feature. He started near the back of the pack in the feature, but patiently passed his competitors to take the race and move ahead in the points standings. Hannah won his first heat, but finished second to Kerr in both the second heat and the feature. Riley Ekins finished 3rd in both heats as well as the feature to remain solid in the points race. For the Late Models, it was John Pollock in his Bill Storey Pontiac #9 who held on for the win in his first heat, but finished fourth in his second heat and had some car troubles in the feature which held him back from taking the checkered flag. Instead it was Don Hart who won the second heat and after working to get past Dwayne Fulford in the feature, went on to win the race. Fulford settled for 3rd while Guelph native, Tim Tolton took the second spot in the feature. In the For Fun division, Bernie Vanderzwet had his car running well and took the checkered flag in both heats; however, due to an early start in the first heat, he was bumped to second and Wyatt Harvey was awarded the win. Harvey used that momentum to take the win in the feature as well with Vanderzwet right behind him. The Hurricane Midgets were also at the Speedway on Saturday and it was Cale Bailey who stole the show. Bailey won both heats as well as the feature to score the Speedway Hat Trick. Bailey explained to everyone that Saturday night was the best his car has ran all year, and it showed. The Hurricane Midgets were also responsible for the only yellow flags of the entire evening as they ran into some collision problems on lap 3 and 6 of the feature. Nathan Meneely finished second in his second heat as well as the feature, and Mike Westwood rounded out the top three in the feature. The Peterborough Speedway Kids Club Members got a treat on Saturday as well, as over fifty kids got their chance to ride in the race cars during intermission! There were also give-ways from Leon’s Insulation and prizes for the winners of the Peterborough Speedway Chicken Dance competition. Car Football rounded out the night which is quite the event for those who haven’t seen it. Check out peterboroughspeedway.com for a full schedule and information on upcoming events! Also, be sure to stop into the Souvenir Booth at Peterborough Speedway for information on Kids Club activities, upcoming events, and photos from the entire season at Peterborough Speedway. Racing resumes at Peterborough Speedway next Saturday, June 30th when the For Funs, Mini Stocks, and Late Models all hit the track along with the Cup Lites for a 50 lap feature. Also, on Sunday, July 1st, the Old Smoke House presents the Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series 250 lap feature. The race will be the second round at Peterborough Speedway this season.
