PEPSI NIGHT AT THE RACES

Racing resumed at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, June 9th after a week off for the First Annual RV and Boat Show the week before. Drivers and fans alike were eager to get back into the excitement, and the kids got a double-shot of Kids Club Events by the time the Pepsi sponsored night of racing had ended. The Peterborough Hyundai Mini-Stocks, For Fun, Legends, and Late Models all took to the asphalt in front a one of the largest crowds at Peterborough Speedway so far this year.
Riley Ekins celebrated his anniversary a couple of weeks ago at Peterborough Speedway and did so by earning the checkered flag in the feature. Ekins was looking to repeat his Mini-Stock dominance on Saturday; however, Andrew Swindells and his green and yellow #4 had other ideas. Both Ekins and Swindells were heat winners, along with Scott Jacobs and Speedway veteran Jack Hannah, but it was Swindells who won when in counted, taking the lead from Ekins late in the feature and hanging on for a narrow victory with Hannah, Robert Kerr, and Ekins right behind, finishing second, third, and fourth respectively. Jacobs rounded out the top 5 for the feature, which showcased nearly twenty cars!
Two weeks ago it was Jimmy Feeney stealing the checkered flag in the feature for the first time in his racing career, and despite leading for the first ten laps of the feature on Saturday, Feeney’s car wouldn’t cooperate with him and he would fail to repeat his feature victory. Instead, it was Guelph native, Tim Tolton in his Black Magic Racing #35 who stole the win, followed by Don ‘The-Hit-Man’ Hart and John Pollock’s Bill Storey Pontiac #9.
In the For-Fun Division, Ayrren Hart was back on the track after a big wreck a couple of weeks ago. His orange #56 is still under repair, but he took the wheel of the #99 and took the checkered flag in his first heat. Aside from Hart’s win, the night belonged to Bernie Vanderzwet, who won the second heat and led from start to finish in the feature.
The Legends closed out the night with one of the best finales all season. Over 20 cars started the feature, and from the start Jason Tomlinson looked poised to take the win. Bruce Grimes and Tim Fernandes were patiently passing cars and closing in on Tomlinson, but Grimes and Fernandes bumped into each other on lap 19, which brought out the yellow flag and sent those two to the back of the pack. Also, Adam Cuthbertson moved into second and was inches behind Tomlinson on the restart. After patiently positioning himself, Cuthbertson made a truly veteran pass on Tomlinson on lap 21 and didn’t look back. Despite a valiant effort, Tomlinson would have to settle for second, with Andy Warbutton rounding out the top three.
The Kids Club Members were on a mission to discover five different jobs at the Peterborough Speedway, and then get an autograph from each person who does that particular job. Completed entries earned the kids a ballot for the end-of-the-season Grand Prize of a brand new Bike courtesy of the Peterborough Speedway Kids Club. Also, at intermission, the Box-Car races took place for the kids, and the Faster Pastor race followed.
