A NIGHT OF FIRSTS
It was a night of celebration at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday, May 26th. The Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Late Models, Legends, and For Fun Divisions all took to the track with Kids Bike Races squeezed in between and the Gauntlet Race closed out the evening. The weather was excellent and the racing was even better! Most people celebrate an anniversary with dinner, gifts, or a movie, but Donna Anderson and Riley Ekins had other plans to celebrate their third anniversary on Saturday night. Anderson returned to the track and started off the For Fun Division with a heat victory. She finished third in her second heat but was able to steal the lead and hang on to win the feature later in the evening. Not to be outdone by his wife, Riley Ekins pulled off the third Speedway Hat Trick of the season, winning both of his heats and fending off race veteran Jack Hannah to capture the checkered flag in the feature. Instead of a couple of big meals, it was a couple of big wins for Anderson and Ekins and from everybody at Peterborough Speedway, congratulations on your anniversary and your racing success! The Late Models didn’t have an anniversary involved in the celebration, but it was an incredible night for the blue #89 car of Jimmy Feeney. A nine-year racing veteran, Feeney had never taken the checkered flag for a feature . . . until Saturday night! Feeney won the first heat and had poll position for the feature. There wasn’t a single yellow flag in the feature, which meant to get the victory, Feeney would have to hold off veterans such as Don Hart and John Pollock from the drop of the green flag, and that’s just what he did! Feeney will look to defend his feature win in two weeks time when points racing resumes at Peterborough Speedway. Legend series racing was back at Peterborough Speedway on Saturday night as well, and it was fan favourite Bruce Grimes who stole the show. Grimes won his first heat, finished second in the next, and after battling it out for 20 laps with Andy Warbutton, made a slick passing move with a handful of laps left to steal the checkered flag in the feature. The crash of the night went to For Fun Rookie Ayrran Hart who rolled his orange #56 right in front of the fans at turn one during the feature. The paramedics rushed to check on Hart, but his car landed right side up and he was shaken, but walked away not nearly as banged up as his car was! The Kids Bike Races brought nearly 20 Kids Club Members onto the track to put their bike pedals to the metal during racing intermission. Chris Adair, Connor Benedict, and Chris Tuck took the checkered flag for each of their respective divisions. The finale of the night was the Gauntlet Race, where racers try anything they can to spin or rollover the Speedway bus as they make their way around the track. The bus only made it a couple laps before being knocked dead by Riley Ekins, Jack Hannah, Mitch Hoyle, and Russell Reynolds. It was a great night of racing action and was perfect to test out the new Speedway Digital Camera. Over 200 pictures were taken, most of them action shots, and they will ALL be for sale at the Peterborough Speedway Souvenir Shop along with all of the other pictures taken during the racing season! Stop in and see Sandra and the gang for information on purchasing pictures, Kids Club Events, and of course, for Peterborough Speedway hats, shirts, jackets, and all other racing gear! Next week the Peterborough Speedway will be hosting the Great Outdoors RV and Boat Show and racing will resume the week after, on June 9th. Pit gates will open at 4:00pm, spectator gates at 6:00, and racing will begin at 7:00. Also, anyone who buys a $4 admission ticket to the RV and Boat Show can hold on to that ticket for FREE ADMISSION to the track on June 9th!
