A VICTORIA DAY WEEKEND FULL OF EXCITEMENT

The Victory Day Long Weekend brought great weather and great racing to Peterborough Speedway. On Saturday night the first green flag was dropped, and on Sunday afternoon the final checkered flag of the weekend was captured and the festivities in between kept fans and racers alike on the edge of their seats. On Saturday night, the third night of points racing at Peterborough Speedway began under sunny skies as the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks, Four Funs, Late Models and, for the first time of the racing season, the Hurricane Midgets took to the track.
In the Four Fun division, Week 3 feature winner Bernie Vanderzwet picked up right where he left off, taking the checkered flag in the first heat. He would have to settle for 4th in the feature as Bill Goodard took the victory after finishing third in both qualifying heats.
The Late Models ran two features for the fans on Saturday night and to the surprise of nobody it was Don ‘The Hit Man’ Hart, a solid fan favourite at Peterborough Speedway, who stole the checkered flag in the first feature, beating John Pollock and Larry Crowe Jr. who finished second and third respectively. In the second feature, Guelph native Tim Tolton came away the victor as Hart settled for a respectable third, giving Hart enough points to become to overall winner of the night..
The Hurricane Midgets ran three heats and Matt Barton seemed poised for track dominance as he won both heats he ran. Barton couldn’t hold on for the Speedway ‘hat trick’ as Brian Woodland stole the checkered flag in the feature with Barton finishing third and Cale Bailey stuck between them for second.
The Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks did provide fans with a Speedway ‘hat trick’ as Jack Hannah’s car #27 stole the show. Hannah won both of his heats and went on to take the checkered flag in the feature. Had it not been for Hannah’s outright control of the races he was in, Robert Kerr may very well have come away with a ‘hat trick’ himself as he finished 2nd in both heats behind Hannah and again in the feature. Oshawa’s Andrew Swindells won his first heat and rounded out the top three in the feature.
To finish the night out fans where treated to the first round of the Rollover competition for 2007, with Riley Ekins taking the victory after doing a complete flip in the air landing back on his wheels. Russell Reynolds come in second.
It was an explosive and entertaining night indeed at Peterborough Speedway, and Sunday’s Enduro Race kept the excitement going. Rather than running 10-lap heats and 25-lap features, the Enduro Series, presented by The Old Smoke House Catering Company, is a 250 lap race where speed isn’t necessarily the most important ingredient in stirring up a victory. Keeping pit stops to a minimum and being able to avoid the carnage left behind by other cars are the most important ways to earn a checkered flag in this lengthy and entertaining style of racing. Dan Cooper traveled down the 115 from Orono to take part in the first of four Enduro races at Peterborough Speedway this season and when the dust settled, he was glad he did. Cooper took the checkered flag in his Cooper Fuels #17 car and literally ran on fumes for the final laps, finishing the race without making a single stop in at the pits!
Aside from Cooper’s victory, the most entertaining highlight of the day went again to Jack Hannah who took part in the Enduro race after his dominance the night before. Hannah had some trouble around turn #3 and after all was said and done, his car was upside down! The Kawartha Chrysler Jeep Dodge Clean-Up Crew rushed to Hannah’s rescue, but Hannah had made it out from his car on his own. After a quick check-up in the pits, Hannah returned to the track to finish the race, and although he did not raise his fourth checkered flag of the weekend, his perseverance and determination was marveled at by all who watched his horrific crash!
The second installment of the Cathcart Trucking Enduro Series takes place on Sunday July 1st. The pit gates will open at 11:30am, spectator gates at 1:30pm, and the race begins at 2:30pm. Come and check it out - and drivers, don’t forget to register in advance for the best value!
