WHO SAYS YOU CANT RACE TRAINS!
On Saturday, May 12th, 2007, the second night of points racing kicked off at Peterborough Speedway. Gates opened at 5:00pm, racing started at 6:00pm, and the excitement began at 6:01pm! From the drop of the first green flag to the train race finale, the night saw racing action taken to the extreme. The qualifying races breezed through with only a few yellow flags and a ton of racing action. Before the feature races, the Peterborough Speedway Kids Club gathered all the kids to go for ride-alongs with some of their favourite stock car racers. Mikayla Harper was named as the Peterborough Speedway Kids Club fan of the week and as a result, she got to ride in the pace car for the first feature race, and got her picture taken with her favourite driver, Tony Tiemersma along with his Late Model Car #7 – soon to be sponsored by On The Links Radio. Also, to celebrate Mother’s Day, the kids nominated their mothers for a bouquet of flowers courtesy of Peterborough Speedway, and Renee, a Speedway Mom nominated for her abundance of kisses and bed-time stories, was the winner! The first feature of the night was the For-Funs, and Ayrren Hart was looking to win his first feature win after winning his second career heat earlier in the night. Luck was not on Ayrren’s side, however, as he blew a tire before the first turn and didn’t finish the race. Bernie Vanderzwet took the lead on lap 4 and held on for the checkered flag. The second feature was the Peterborough Hyundai Ministocks, and Scott Jacobs had poll position and was looking for the checkered flag. But it was Robert Kerr who took the lead early and didn’t look back as Jack Hannagh, and his Ace Delivery car #27 was forced to settle for second. Riley Ekins was a heat winner earlier in the night, but unfortunately had to pull out of the feature because of car problems. The big and fast Late Models took to the track next for their feature and Tony Tiemersma had the poll position and never looked back. All 25 laps ran without a flag, except of course for the checkered one which went to Tiemersma who led the entire race, despite being trailed closely by fan favourite Don ‘The Hit Man’ Hart. The final feature did not disappoint as the colourful, loud, and speedy Legends hit the track. This series has been somewhat of a four-driver contest so far as Rob Degeer, Bruce Grimes, Adam Cuthbertson, and ‘Dandy’ Andy Warbutton have been among the leaders in virtually every heat and every feature. The four drivers started the feature in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th spot on the track which meant the fans would be in for a neck-and-neck race. This wound up being exactly the case, as Grimes quickly moved into third spot, and after a yellow flag on lap 7, the top four cars were Grimes, Warbutton, Degeer, and Cuthbertson respectively. The four battled until mayhem broke out on lap 20, and when the dust settled, Degeer and Grimes had been moved to the very back of the pack with only five laps to go. As a result, Cuthbertson and Warbutton were bumper-to-bumper for the final laps and Cuthbertson came out on top. It was an incredible race and an even better finish! As if the racing wasn’t exciting enough, the finale of the night was the train races, a 10 lap heat where three teams of three cars each go head to head. The catch is that all three cars on each team have their own drivers, but are chained together! After tearing up the track and the grass, it was the St. Peter’s High School Alumni team that took the checkered flag. It was an exciting end to an incredibly exciting night of racing at Peterborough Speedway!
