POINTS BATTLE STARTS OFF HEATED

On Saturday, May 5th, the second week of the racing season began at Peterborough Speedway. Aside from a small breeze, Mother Nature was on our side as racing got under way at 6:00pm under blue, sunny skies. The Legend Series had two new faces from different parts of the continent as Brady Creamer took part in the festivities all the way from Miramichi, New Brunswick, and 5-time Georgia Legend Series Champion Dwight Pilgrim came all the way up from Atlanta.
Again the qualifying heats moved well on schedule and as the sun set over Peterborough Speedway, the features began. The first feature was the Peterborough Hyundai MiniStocks, and the #35 car of Robert Kerr took the lead on lap 6 and fought off Jack Hannagh to hang on for the win. Hannagh came within inches of finishing the hat-trick as he won both of his qualifying heats, but had to settle for second in the feature – which was impressive considering he started the race in last.
The For-Fun Series saw a couple of firsts on Saturday night as Ayrran Hart won his first race ever in the first qualifying heat of the night! The feature was not as kind to Hart who had trouble in the three-car race. Bernie Vanderzwetz’s #15 car led for the first 14 laps, but Kent Missions made a pass on the outside and took the checkered flag for his first victory.
In what looks to be the most exciting series of the year, the Legends took to the track next. The first yellow flag came out on lap 12, and when the smoke cleared and the green came back out, Andy Warbutton was in the lead with Speedway veterans Bruce Grimes, Rob Degeer, and Adam Cuthbertson right behind him. Grimes quickly took the lead once racing resumed, and held on to take the checkered flag. There was an unintentional fireworks display on lap 14 as Chris Maracle’s car #23 blew sparks from turn one to turn three before being towed off the track. With Grimes, Degeer, Warbutton, and Cuthbertson all racing at their best, it will no doubt be an interesting series to follow this season.
The final feature of the night was the Peterborough Late Models. These cars race as fast as they are loud and kept the fans on the ends of their seats for the whole 30 laps. After about a half-dozen yellow flags it was the #7 car of Tony Tiemersma who took the checkered flag. Tiemersma was quick to thank his brother and his crew for helping make his car run at peak performance.
Also, a big congratulations to Brandt Graham of Orono, and Tori Crowe of Alderville who both won their bike races in the kids event for the night. Remember to check the website for upcoming events for the Peterborough Speedway Kid’s Club and for your chance to win a brand new bike! All in all it was another edge-of-your-seat night for the fans and drivers at Peterborough Speedway, and don’t forget to come out next Saturday night when we’ll do it all again!
