Chase For The Colours
By Bob Lawless – Bandit Photo On a beautiful Sunday afternoon people can think of hundreds of things to do to entertain themselves, but for die-hard race fans an afternoon at the track is where they want to be. Sunday was just such a day. It was one of those rare events for drivers, crews and fans where being in the bright sunshine doing what we love the most, stock car racing. Today’s activities included 4 classes of cars featuring a 100-lap Late Model feature. The top three in each division earned a spot in their “A” feature for this year’s 17th annual Autumn Colors Classic. As expected, cars came from all over Ontario to get that spot guaranteed for the October event. In the first feature the Four Fun class saw Lance Foster win the top spot. Foster has already had a great start to the year visiting victory lane numerous times. Also in the 2nd and 3rd spots were Andy McCann and Nathan Mitchell. In the Peterborough Hyundai Mini Stocks division the task got a bit harder with 23 mini stocks filling the track. It was visiting racer Mike Smith who captured top spot followed by Peterborough’s own Mike Nelson and another visitor Dave Watchorn. The Legends also made an appearance this weekend with Adam Cuthbertson capturing the top spot in their feature event. In the main event for the day the task at hand was not only leading the race but over coming car problems and navigating around 20 other cars on the track. On such a tight track lapped traffic always comes into play with these high speed cars and only the best driver with the best handling car or the one who doesn’t have to pit will rise to the top. Early leader Amanda Connolly gave up the top spot when engine problems sidelined her. Another fan favorite “Stompin Tom” Walters ran into problems after scrubbing the wall in turn 3 when he came up to lapped cars. The #88 of Steven Matthews slipped into the top spot around mid race and never looked back, easily capturing the checkers. Brandon Watson and Gord Shepherd captured the two remaining spots. If this is any indication of what to expect for the 17th annual Autumn Colors Classic on October 9th, 10th, and 11th it is going to be a great three days.
